Phil Corrigan comics originally started as Secret Agent X-9 by writer Dashiell Hammett (The Maltese Falcon) and artist Alex Raymond (Flash Gordon). Syndicated by King Features, it ran from January 22, 1934 until February 10, 1996. X-9 was a nameless agent who worked for a nameless agency. X-9 used the name "Dexter" in the first story ("It's not my name, but it'll do.") and kept using it or being called by it in later stories, but acquired the name "Phil Corrigan" in the 1940s. Decades later, the strip was renamed Secret Agent Corrigan.
A Crime Empire - Phil Corrigan Comics
I still have no clear idea what Garnet Ekk's business is about. But since he employs hitmen, bribes important officials and, in the front yard, keeps a dog he calls Wolf, he must be running a goddamn crime empire. The agent who was investigating the case has gone missing. Corrigan is off the case, at least officially. But he takes a personal interest in Blue Octopus. That's way too cute to be the name of a terrible gang of murderers, don't you think? Anyway, in the course of investigation he meets Fior, the beautiful daughter of Ekk. She asks his help to bring down the Blue Octopus. Turns out she already has a boyfriend.
